The John Sevier Hunter Education Center (JSHEC) is located on Rifle Range Road in North Central Knox County in the community of Halls Crossroads.

JSHEC is a multi-use facility managed by the TWRA for public use. The center provides Hunter Education classes and has various firearm and archery ranges. A Range Safety Officer is present during all open hours.

Pistol, rifle, and archery ranges are open on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 pm to 6 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, and Sundays from 1 pm to 6 pm. Shotgun ranges are open on Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm to 6 pm and Tuesday from 6:30 pm to 10 pm.

There are two clubs located on-site that provide additional opportunities for archery and gun related programs: Smoky Mountain Archers and the Volunteer Rifle and Pistol Club.

Daily or annual fees are required to use the facility:

  • Adults (16 and older) - $5.50 per 2 hrs or $101.00/year
  • Youths (15 and under) - $1.50 per 2 hrs or $26.00/year

Hunter Education On-line/Internet Class Field Day:

The field day exam is only for those who have successfully completed an online class. Attendance to this Field Day requires pre-registration and confirmation. You MUST REGISTER by emailing: John.SevierRange@state.tn.us. Please use "Confirm Field Day Attendance" on the subject line.

Make sure to bring your "final report" to the field day event. Each student is required to achieve a minimum of 75% on the on-line test and final test to pass.

Hunter Education Classes:

Students must be at least 9 years old to enroll in a hunter education class. Participants need to bring a pencil and their Social Security Number to class. Classes are held on M, T, Th, and Friday. You MUST PRE-REGISTER by calling (865) 594-6280.

Boat Operator Certification Test:

Certification test are given monthly at JSHEC. You MUST CALL Roy Smith via his office voicemail for the class schedule and attendance is by APPOINTMENT ONLY: (423) 587-7037 or (800) 332-0900, extension 158.

Volunteer Opportunities

 

Range Safety Officer:

NRA has a "Basic Range Safety Officer (RSO) Course" for individuals interested in helping shooters maintain a safe environment while involved in the sport of shooting. A RSO oversees the safety and enforces the rules and regulations of an active range.

A home study course is available for current NRA Trainers or NRA Law Enforcement Instructors or a classroom course may be scheduled through a Chief RSO or check with us on next available course. You must be at least 21 to become a RSO.


Hunter Education Instructor:

Lead or assist in the teaching of Tennessee's Hunter Education Program. An application for becoming an instructor can be obtained from any TWRA Regional office. You must be at least 18 to become a Hunter Education Instructor.


Coach/Instructor/Mentor:

The Scholastic Clay Target Program is a cooperative effort between the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA), National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA), NRA and TWRA. This program is for elementary through high school age students and may be scheduled as an in-school program.
